Here's a few ideas for your wish list.

Most of the time, people look at making wish lists as listing things they desire. But, for many, experiences mean so much more than stuff. What are some of the activities you’ve always wanted to try and do but just haven’t focused yourself on saving money towards? Or how about activities you’d like to do when you’re on vacation? Why not add them to your wish list?

As you update your wish list on Giftster throughout the year, you might want to scribble in some experience gifts. Experience gifts allow you to go do something rather than focusing only on material objects. They are gifts of adventure, relaxation, outdoor time, or together time that will create memories instead of collecting dust like material gifts often do.

Why add experiences to your wish list

Not only do experience gifts create memories, but according to recent studies, gifts that create experiences enhance a person’s general happiness. An article from the NY Times states that materialism is bad for your emotional well-being. Research shows that while the media tries to convince us that material goods would provide us with happiness, the happiness from material possessions is temporary and can cause more stress in the long run. A Cornell study shows that happiness grows with the purchase of an experience and declines with the purchase of a material good.

Brainstorm experience gift ideas

When I try to sit down and create a wish list, my mind goes immediately blank. It then becomes almost challenging to create a list of things that I actually want or need. A better approach for me is to create a wish list as I think of things. For example, I go to make my breakfast and find that my toaster is no longer working the way it used to. So, I added a toaster to my Giftster wishlist in the moment. Adding experiences to my wishlist is slightly more challenging, and they don’t come to mind often in everyday life.

One trick to figuring out the activities you’d like to add is filling in the blanks to these few sentences. Instead of focusing on your wishlist, you think about your answers to the blanks. You may have more than one answer for some of them. That’s ok!

  1. I’ve always wanted to try ________________.
  2. I’ve always wanted to learn ________________.
  3. I’ve always wanted to visit ________________ and do ________________.
  4. I’ve been thinking about doing ________________ for a while but haven’t gotten around to it/haven’t had the money for it.
  5. A goal I’ve always wanted to work on is ________________ but I need to do ________________ first.
  6. I’ve always wanted to see ________________.
  7. I’ve always wanted to meet/get an autograph from ________________ but don’t know how to make that happen.
  8. I’ve always wanted to go on a ________________ retreat.
  9. I need ______________ to take my hobby to the next level.
  10. I would like to do __________ again.

Consider new experiences

hot air balloon ride

When I married my husband, I wanted to fully embrace his culture and family. That meant I needed to learn Spanish. So, one of the experiences I asked for was a Spanish course that would help me. This is just one example of a new experience that you could include on your wishlist.

Here are some quick ideas to help you brainstorm the experiences and activities you’d be most interested in:

  • Rounds of golf
  • Cooking classes
  • Flying lessons
  • Skydiving
  • Skiing (water or snow)
  • Zip lining
  • White water rafting
  • Various tours (could be city or themed like a food tour, drink/spirit tour, walking architecture tour, boat tour, helicopter tour…you get the idea)
  • Dining at a new or fancy restaurant
  • Skills or hobby classes (woodworking, knitting, crocheting, pottery, glassblowing, etc.)
  • Learn a new language.
  • Become more physically fit (could be running, cycling, walking, swimming, etc.)
  • Scuba Diving/Snorkeling
  • Hiking tour
  • Rock climbing
  • Music Lessons
  • Dancing lessons
  • Yoga classes
  • Hot air balloon ride

When I asked for Spanish language lessons, I wasn’t exactly sure what course I wanted. I simply asked for the lessons and let my new husband’s family decide what would be the best course for me to learn. Thankfully, Giftster is adaptable and makes adding as little or as much as you want easy. If you know exactly where or with what business you want to do your experience, you can include it on your wishlist. In contrast, you may be like me and only know that you want to do something. Giftster is truly a universal wish list registry. You can list absolutely anything you want on your list! Just even simply saying “I’ve always wanted to try this and don’t know how to make it happen,” could be enough for some gift-givers to go off of to give you a gift that you will never forget.

Add the actual activity

Your first option is to add the actual activity to your wishlist. This works well if there is a business that you want to do your chosen activity with. You could ask for a gift card or gift certificate for the cost of doing the activity. Then, you can use the gift to purchase your tickets or book your experience with your chosen business. This approach works well for experiences like crafting, tours, cooking classes, golfing, yoga classes, or skydiving.

Add tools or equipment

Another option is to skip adding the actual activity and instead ask for tools or equipment that you would need to do the activity. This approach works well when you already participate in an activity and want to upgrade or enhance your experience. Perhaps you have had your eye on a new cooking utensil that would let you learn a new technique. Maybe you want to upgrade your golf equipment to take your game to the next level. Perhaps your yoga mat looks tired, and you would like a new one that suits your passion better. Asking for new equipment or tools is a perfect way to include friends and family in your passions. You can help them feel more connected by adding the exact item you want to your Giftster wishlist. That way, you don’t risk them buying the wrong item.

Choose subscriptions or entertainment

There may be some experiences that you are passionate about but cannot always participate in. In this situation, you could ask for gifts that allow you to enjoy the experience without actually participating in it. This could be a magazine, blog, email, video, or some other regular publication subscription. Or it could be a monthly subscription box that celebrates your interest. These gifts are still an experience, albeit a different type of experience.

Experience gifts for kids

Some of my fondest childhood memories are not the presents I received but the experiences I had with my parents. You can create memorable moments for your children by creating a children’s experience wishlist for them. Similar to the fill-in-the-blank list for yourself, work through these questions while thinking about your children’s interests.

  1. My child is most interested in __________.
  2. _________ holds my child’s attention the longest.
  3. My child’s favorite activity with parents is ___________.
  4. My child expressed a desire to try ___________.
  5. I would like to introduce my child to ___________.

Spending time with loved ones

Share your Giftster list with your friends and family because one of the best things about experience gifts is that they are an excellent way for you to spend some time with a family member, friend, or significant other. Plus, there will be dozens of photo ops to create memories to be talked about at the Christmas celebrations to come or to be used on next year’s Christmas card. Add your favorite experiences to your Christmas wish list on Giftster this year, and let your family and loved ones gift you memories.

Take the leap! Log on to Giftster and add some of those experiences and activities to your wish list today.

Just the other day, my high school friend, Jennifer, posted an interesting question to all her friends.

A HS graduation party but run more llike a baby/bridal shower

Now, I’m sure you all know what my answer was.  I thought it was a brilliant idea!  And even better, Giftster is the perfect tool to help her achieve such a gift registry. I’m a bit biased, though.

But then her other friends began to respond, all saying that they, too, thought it was an excellent idea.  What better way to prepare the new high school graduate for college than to give them items they could certainly use when they leave home?

Approximately 69% of high school graduates go on to college. While many colleges require freshmen to stay in student housing their first year away from home, that’s not always the case. More and more incoming students are arriving with college credit allowing them to enter as at least a sophomore, while some schools allow all students to live off campus if they choose to do so. That means more things to pack which, really, means more things to purchase for this first taste of independence away from home.

So why not a high school graduation registry or wish list focused on those college living needs to help a student not stress about the small stuff? It really is ideal.

Essential college gifts

On top of the logical items like sheets, blankets, and various electronics that most college students need, there are other items that may be needed for living off-campus like a toaster, blender, or furniture if the apartment is not furnished. These things start to add up little by little.

While giving money as a gift is always a viable option for graduation, some still like the idea of giving an actual, tangible gift. That’s where having a registry to shop from is helpful for all your family’s aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

Gift cards for college students

If gift cards are more your speed, consider one from a home improvement or hardware store if the grad is crafty and likes to make their own furnishings. Or maybe a gift card to a grocery store or gas station if driving to and from campus is necessary. There are so many ways to support a new college student.

What to include on a college gift registry

I found great tips from Big Future by The College Board and Her Campus. Also, check out your future college’s website for tips they may have about what to bring for living both on and off campus.

Is it okay to give a charitable donation as a gift on behalf of someone else? https://www.giftster.com/news/give-donation-name-gift/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 14:51:09 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=13757 Should you give a charitable donation as a gift? The answer isn’t always a simple one.

The post Is it okay to give a charitable donation as a gift on behalf of someone else? appeared first on Giftster and was written by Giftster.

We can all agree that giving to charities is a good thing. The hard work that charities do results in countless worthy causes receiving much-needed support. However, that doesn’t mean a charitable donation is an ideal gift for everyone.

What does the recipient want?

If the recipient directly asked for no gifts and for people to donate, your answer is easy! The recipient has made the decision to donate an easy one by telling you that this is what they want. Typically, in this situation, the recipient will request that you donate to their chosen charity. Simply donate and then give the recipient a card that shares that you donated.

Recipient’s connection to the charity

If you decide to donate on the recipient’s behalf without their direction, you will need to choose the right charity. For the donation to have meaning, you should choose a charity they actively support. Perhaps they regularly volunteer somewhere that you can donate to. Or there could be a cause that they are passionate about. Be careful when choosing, as supporting causes can be very personal. You don’t want to offend or insult the recipient by choosing the wrong charity.  In addition, many people think a charitable donation as a gift is the lazy way out because the giver doesn’t have to think about what gift to buy. Donating to a charity with which the recipient has a direct connection can help combat this.

Consider still getting a token gift

Try pairing your donation with the token gift. The majority of your gift-giving budget will go towards charitable donation. Then, use a small portion of your budget to buy a small token or symbolic gift. This approach alleviates the common disappointment felt when someone receives a “donated on your behalf” gift.

Giving a small gift in addition to the donation can help overcome the common assumption that you are trying to be cheap. Many people assume that a donation gift means the giver didn’t want to spend any money on a gift, so they gave a few dollars to a charity. There is also the issue that the donation doesn’t directly benefit the recipient. A small gift can directly benefit the recipient in some way.

Shop the charity

Some charities understand that people want to support them but don’t want to just hand over money. To address this, they have online stores where you can buy items. Instead of donating as a gift, why not shop at the charity’s donation shop? This option benefits everyone: the charity receives support, and the recipient receives a present.

Donate and give a gift

Take the guesswork out of gift-giving when everyone has an online wish list. When your friends and family have online gift wish lists, you no longer struggle to choose the perfect gift. Anything can be added to the list, like items sold in a charity store. That way, you could support a recipient’s charity while giving them a present you know they’ll love.

What do I do if someone gives me a more expensive gift than I gave them? https://www.giftster.com/news/receive-more-expensive-gift-than-gave/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 17:44:25 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=13760 Handle getting a gift that is more expensive than you gave with grace and finesse.

The post What do I do if someone gives me a more expensive gift than I gave them? appeared first on Giftster and was written by Giftster.

]]>
It is one of the biggest challenges when exchanging gifts with someone. We all do a delicate dance when determining how much we should spend on the gift. There are cultural norms, your relationship with the person, and your gift-buying budget to consider. Sometimes, we get it wrong and find ourselves opening a present that is significantly more expensive gift than the gift we bought to give.

Express your gratitude

You should always show gratitude for the gifts you receive. Despite the disparity in gift values and the awkwardness you feel, it is important to say thank you. The gift giver obviously put considerable time, thought, and money into their gift. They will want to see that you appreciate the gift. Say thank you and try to acknowledge something about the gift that would have inspired the other person to buy it for you.

Be direct about your discomfort

If there is a large disparity between the gift values, then odds are the other person has also noticed it. Being direct about the issue can help address and alleviate the awkwardness. How you approach the topic will depend on what you feel comfortable with and your relationship with the other person. You could make a joke to bring some laughter to the issue. Or you can take a heartfelt approach.

Avoid trying to one-up them

If you can’t afford to match the amount they spent on your gift, consider taking a different approach next time. Time spent and effort can be highly valued. Make them a custom gift if you have a crafty hobby. Prepare them a nice meal if you are a whizz in the kitchen. Because someone gives you an expensive gift doesn’t mean you need to match it in monetary value. And if it’s not in your budget it’s never a good idea to over-extend yourself to do so.

Consider returning the gift

One option is to return the gift. If you don’t feel comfortable addressing the value issue or the gifter refuses to accept the gift back, returning it could be the best option. You might need to wait a bit for time to pass, and then you can quietly return the gift. If you don’t have a gift receipt, you may need to accept store credit.

Suggest sharing wish lists for next time

Sharing gift wishlists can take the guesswork out of gift-giving. By sharing with lists, you can set expectations about gift-giving before it’s time to make exchanges. This is also a good opportunity to open a conversation about expenditure expectations. Expensive doesn’t always mean better. Studies show that recipients appreciate gifts they requested more than thoughtful gifts that they never asked for.

Happy gifting!

What are some creative ways to give the gift of time or experiences? https://www.giftster.com/news/creative-ways-give-experience-gifts/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 20:40:52 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=13653 Gift a truly memorable present by choosing to gift an experience or precious free time.

Sometimes, the most meaningful and memorable gifts are the intangible ones. Instead of adding to the never-ending accumulation of stuff, give the gift of time or experience. These gifts place value on forming core memories and showing that you truly know the recipient. Perhaps they do everything for everyone else, and never take time for themselves. Or maybe they are in perpetual pursuit of growth and betterment. Maybe they love the thrill. These gift ideas will help you gift an experience for the next holiday, birthday, or anniversary.

Hire a service to perform chores

You can give the gift of time by having a professional take care of the chores that need to be done. That way, the recipient of your gift can have more free time to do the things they enjoy most. Most people won’t ask for this type of gift. So, you will need to pay attention to where they could use the most assistance.

  • Home cleaning
  • Car detailing
  • Lawn mowing
  • Home chef
  • Grocery delivery service
  • Laundry service

With all of these services being home-based, you have the perfect opportunity to turn the gift-giving experience into an eventful one. Create a scavenger hunt that has the recipient looking for clues that will give them hints about their gift.

Classes to learn something new

Some people value continued growth through new experiences. They appreciate learning new skills or developing their current ones. This type of gift is perfect for those who value experiences over stuff.

  • Art
  • Dancing
  • Cooking

When giving a class experience as a present, you could keep the class itself a secret until it’s time to attend. Make plans with the recipient for the day and time of the class. Then, in the days leading up to it, you could send them videos or social media posts that would hint at what you two are going to be doing.

Tickets to an event

If your intended recipient has a passion for the arts, music, or sports, then tickets to an event are the perfect gift. You could gift them a single ticket and buy yourself a paired ticket. That way, you and them can attend the event together. Another option is to give multiple tickets to the recipient. That way, they could choose who they attend the event with.

  • Concerts
  • Sporting events
  • Theater

Even though the majority of event tickets are digital these days, you can still print them out or print the confirmation of purchase. Then, turn the gift into its own experience. Place the tickets in a box and wrap the box. Then, place the first box into a second and wrap the larger box. Continue this with as many boxes as you have or want to use. The recipient will have the fun of opening several presents all while building the anticipation.

Self-care/pampering services

Give a gift that creates a relaxing and pampering experience for the recipient. A day of pampering lets them focus on themselves and their own mental and physical health.

  • Hair styling
  • Spa day and treatments
  • Manicure and pedicure
  • Day pass to a local resort or weekend away

Because these experiences are all about self care, they are perfect for giving small token gifts that would complement the experience. That way, the recipient could continue the experience at home.

Unique experiences

For the adventurous individual in your life, gift an experience that will take their breath away and get their heart racing. These unique gifts are the type of activities you would expect to see on someone’s bucket list. By purchasing a unique experience for them, you take away one of the barriers that may have prevented them from doing the activity. If you are brave, you can join them in the experience.

  • Sky diving
  • Zip lining
  • Hot air balloon ride
  • Race car driving
  • Boat day rental

Gift an experience or time

We live busy lives and are constantly pulled in different directions. Instead of giving an item as a present, why not give the recipient the gift of time? These precious moments can help them relax, pursue passions, or make lasting memories.

While you may want to give an experience or time, gift-giving isn’t about what you want. It is about what the recipient wants. Creating a Giftster wish list with friends and family is the easiest way to always give the perfect gift.

Father’s Day is almost here, and it’s time to shop for those special guys in our lives we call Dad. How are you planning to spoil your pops this year? Here are a few gift ideas for all types of dads to get you started, even if yours is one who says, “I don’t need anything.”

For the stylish dad

If the father in your life is always impeccably dressed, celebrate his stylish taste with a personalized jewelry piece. It can be the perfect accent for his favorite ensemble. Another perfect gift for the dad, who takes pride in his appearance, is a gift set that includes luxury grooming products. There are kits that are perfect for whatever dad’s needs are, from skincare to shaving.

Sporty Gifts for Dad

Sporty Father’s Day gift ideas

A sports-loving dad will appreciate a gift that helps them enjoy their passion. You could gift them a jersey from their favorite sports team. Just be sure to choose the right player from their team. In contrast, perhaps your dad is the type to get out of the stands and onto the field. A fitness tracker is perfect for helping them monitor their performance. For the serious gym buff, help them push to the next level with top-shelf sports recovery gear.

Sentimental gifts for dad

Get in touch with Dad’s sentimental side by giving him a gift that helps you express how much he means to you. A shared journal lets you write down your thoughts and feelings. You can then gift the journal to dad. Then, he can write down his contributions and gift the journal back to you. Another option is to give dad family history research. This is a gift that keeps on giving as you two can connect over your shared ancestry. If dad would rather focus on the present, consider a framed picture of you and him. He can place it anywhere and admire it whenever he wants.

If you are helping little ones with their gifts to dad, make his Father’s Day extra special with our free 5 Things I Love About You Dad Printable. Share your works of art with us on social media using the hashtag #mygiftsterstory.

Food gifts for Father’s Day

If your dad is king of the grill, Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to gift him the ultimate in outdoor cooking tools. Maybe he could use an upgrade to his current tools. Or perhaps he’s had his eye on a new piece of equipment that would let him expand his outdoor cooking menu like a pizza oven.

A subscription service may be the perfect gift for dads who prefer to eat more than cook. There are plenty of options, such as a meat subscription, monthly snack box, or international delights. These monthly boxes are like a gift that keeps on giving long after Father’s Day. He can find new favorites as he discovers new culinary delights.

Gifts for the DIY dad

If your dad is the king of home DIY projects, give him a Father’s Day gift to make his life a little easier. A wallet multitool is perfect for those sudden fix-it projects that can happen anywhere. If your dad is more of a gearhead, then pivot your gift to focus more on tools and accessories for working on his ride. A gardening kit is perfect for those dads who enjoy getting their hands dirty in the yard. Not sure what he needs? Don’t be afraid to ask or request a wish list so you can get him what he really would love while still surprising him.

Gift ideas for the first-time dad

The first Father’s Day after the birth of a newborn is a big deal and should be celebrated as such. Give the first-time dad in your life a special gift that will commemorate the occasion. Gift him a set of books that he can read to his little one. Consider getting a variety of books that will be perfect for growing with the little one. Another option is to celebrate his personal style while performing his fatherly duties with tactical baby gear. These durable pieces aren’t overly frilly, helping your new dad to feel comfortable and settle into his new role.

Technology gifts for Father’s Day

Your dad doesn’t have to be a techie to appreciate a thoughtful technology gift. With the average American owning multiple devices, a charging station is a convenient and helpful gift. Consider the types of devices your dad has and get him a docking station that will accommodate them. It could hold his cell phone, smartwatch, and tablet. Another option is to buy a streaming subscription for pop. He can download the app and watch his favorite content whenever and wherever he wants. You can buy streaming services for any interest, from sports to history and automobiles. A small but handy gift is Apple Airtags. They can be used to track almost anything. They are perfect for tracking the leys he always misplaces, his wallet, vehicle, trailer, or gym bag.

Daily essentials

If your dad needs day-to-day essential items instead of gifts this year, create and share an essential items list. Give him the gift of not stressing about the items he needs most.

Forget the usual flowers and greeting cards. Discover the fascinating history of Mother’s Day, from its humble beginnings to its worldwide celebration today. There’s more to this special day than just brunch – including unique ways to honor the memory of moms who have passed and how to create heartfelt traditions of your own.

Let’s first look at some of the ways families around the globe pay tribute to the remarkable women who’ve shaped our lives.

Mother’s Day traditions from around the world

While Mother’s Day is a national holiday in the United States, it isn’t the only country that celebrates the holiday. Many countries throughout the world have their own traditions for how they recognize mothers. You could incorporate them into your traditions for a unique celebration.

Mexico

Mother’s Day is one of the biggest and busiest holidays. The traditions are similar to those in the United States, with flowers and the importance of spending time with family. A unique tradition is mariachi bands performing Las Mañanitas

United Kingdom

In the UK, Mother’s Day is still tied to its religious roots, with it being held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. However, how people celebrate the day differs greatly from its origins. Some individuals may stick with the traditions by using the day to honor the Virgin Mary. Others choose to give their mother a simnel cake.

Simnel cake
Simnel cake

These are light fruit cakes that have layers of marzipan (shown above). Candy, cards, and flowers are also popular.

Italy

In Italy, Mother’s Day is known as La Festa della Mamma. Mothers are pampered with a day of relaxation. They aren’t allowed to cook or do chores (sign me up for this!). Family members often give homemade gifts or fresh pastries.

Australia

While giving flowers is a similar tradition, mothers in Australia specifically get chrysanthemums, or “mums” for short. Their popularity is because mothers in Australia are called “mum,” which mirrors the flower’s name. Other traditions mirror the traditions of the United States.

History of Mother’s Day

The Mother’s Day holiday didn’t start out with the same traditions and focus that we know today. Looking back into ancient history, the Greeks and Romans celebrated the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele at annual festivals. In the 16th century, those living in the UK would participate in Mothering Sunday. It was held on the fourth Sunday of the Lent. The tradition was to visit your “mother church,” which was the church you were christened at or your nearest chapel or church. People would go a-mothering.

It was one of the few days during the year that servants would be given the entire day off. Children and families would join servants on their journey to their mother church. This eventually turned the day into an opportunity for family reunions. The focus shifted to individual family mothers rather than the church.

Mother’s Day really began to take the form we know today in the United States. A woman named Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother’s work nursing soldiers during the Civil War by getting a day dedicated to honoring all mothers. Her definition of a mother was quite broad:

“…the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”

–Anna Jarvis

President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday in 1914. Watch more about Anna Jarvis and the history of Mother’s Day in the U.S below.

Start new Mother’s Day traditions in your family

Honoring tradition is one way to celebrate Mother’s Day. However, it can feel a bit empty or impersonal if you don’t have a direct connection to the gifts or activities that you are doing. Instead, consider making it more meaningful to your family by starting new traditions.

How to create your own traditions

  1. Reflect: Consider what makes you and your family’s relationship with your mom unique and special. Reflect on shared interests, memorable experiences, or meaningful activities you all might enjoy. This could be anything from cooking to playing sports, creating art, going out to eat, or traveling.
  2. Brainstorm: List out ideas for new traditions that resonate with your mom’s personality and preferences. Think outside the box and consider activities or rituals that are both meaningful and enjoyable for both of you.
  3. Personalize: Add personal touches to make the tradition truly special. Consider incorporating elements that hold sentimental value, such as favorite foods, cherished memories, or symbolic gestures.
  4. Plan: Once you have a few ideas, plan out the logistics of your new tradition. Decide on a specific activity or event, set a date and time, and make any necessary arrangements to ensure everything goes smoothly.

You could be the type of family that appreciates sticking with the familiar. Or your family could thrive on trying new things. You want something that can be a shared activity or thing that you can make memories and bond over. Don’t forget that the holiday is about mom, so your chosen tradition should be something she loves.

Embracing all moms

Modern families can take all forms, and with it, the image of a mom can come in many forms. It’s important to recognize all non-traditional moms who take on the role of providing unyielding love, guidance, and support. From the single moms to the stepmoms and the women who haven’t given birth but still take on the role for the children in their lives. Don’t be afraid to share your love and appreciation for all the mother-figures in your life.

Honoring mothers who have come before us

While Mother’s Day can be a day filled with laughter and joy for some, it can also bring feelings of sadness for others. Our mothers are influential people who leave a lasting hole in our hearts when they pass away. This can make Mother’s Day especially difficult when we are reminded of the wonderful women who are no longer with us.

Turn this potentially sad day into a touching one by celebrating and honoring the mothers who have come before us.

Thoughtful ways to celebrate a mother’s spirit

  • Try lighting a candle with a scent that reminds you of her. Scent is a powerful tool for evoking memories.
  • Reminisce by looking at pictures and videos.
  • Write a letter to your mother where you share your thoughts, feelings, and what you have been up to over the last year.
  • Spend the day doing your mom’s favorite activities.
  • Plan a celebration with your siblings
  • Bake/cook her favorite foods
  • Visit her final resting place with flowers or her favorite things

Start your Mother’s Day traditions

There is a reason so many countries have similar traditions when it comes to celebrating and honoring mothers. Flowers, candy, cards, and jewelry are popular gifts. Acts of service are also popular, such as cooking, baking, or cleaning.

However, how you celebrate Mother’s Day can look very different from one family to the next. The goal is to celebrate the mom in your life with a kind gesture, gift, or activity that she will appreciate the most.

If you need help with gift ideas for Mother’s Day, have mom make a giftster.com account. She can then create a wish list that gives you a roadmap to the gifts she wants the most. Remind her she can even just jot down “quality time with my family” or “dust the house” as an item on the list. With Giftster she can truly can add anything her heart desires.

It’s the last weekend before Christmas! Are you relaxing, enjoying time with family because you used Giftster and all your shopping is finished? Or are you braving the store lines, choosing overnight shipping, and hoping for the best? If you’re using Giftster, we’ve got your back! Here are my six do’s and don’ts for last-minute Christmas shopping that help you continue to get gifts right.

1. Do: Give a gift card

Don’t: Pull money from your wallet and decide that’s your gift.

While giving gift cards and cash are essentially the same as they are both monetary gifts, one has a bit more thought in it than the other. And we’ve always been told it’s the thought that counts, right? Look at the recipient’s Giftster list for where they may like to shop. Even better, look at their gift preferences for tips about what store they most want to shop. Get creative with presenting their gift card by placing it in a fancy box, wrapping it like a pro, and finishing it with a ribbon and bow.

Unless they’ve specifically told you or have it on their list that they’re saving up for something in particular, cash is probably not the ideal gift to give. Well…unless they are a teenager or college student, where the cash would come in handy the most. But I promise you, a gift card given to your wife for SpaFinder or something like that will be much more appreciated than taking out folded cash from your wallet and sticking it in a card.

2. Do: Give a subscription box.

Don’t: Go to the store, find everything related to this one thing your loved one is into, buy everything you see that relates to it, and put it in a box.

There’s pretty much a subscription box for everything these days. A subscription box gift is a gift that keeps on giving! It works well for last-minute Christmas shopping because you can order them online. It doesn’t need to be for very long; it could be a couple of months, whatever is most appropriate for the recipient. It will show more thought in the gift than just going and buying several random things just because they’re related to someone’s interest. A subscription box can also introduce them to items and themes adjacent to their interest, helping your gift to be insightful while avoiding redundancy.

3. Do: Give a nice piece of clothing.

Don’t: Give clothing if you don’t know what size to give.

I’ve received clothing that’s too small and, at other times, too big. Sometimes, there’s a receipt; other times, I’m just stuck with it. To the back of the closet, never to be worn or used by me if I donate, return, or sell it. So, while giving that sweater in the perfect color for your nephew, if you don’t know the size, put it down and move on. If you really want to give it, you could always give a gift card for the sweater amount and plan a date to take the person shopping so they can try it on. Spend time with a loved one AND give a gift? That’s a two-for-one present! Another option is to gift them a personal shopping experience with a service like Mindful Closet or Stich Fix. However, approach this gift cautiously; you want it to be appreciated. You don’t want to insult the recipient by implying they need style help.

4. Do: Donate to the recipient’s favorite charity.

Don’t: Forget to tell them that you donated.

I may be talking from experience here because this may have happened to me once or twice. If you donate online, the charity will often give you the chance to print a letter to give to the recipient. Sometimes, they send a letter directly to them as well, but for those of us who like to give something for the person to open, that defeats the purpose. Have a little fun with this type of gift, and get creative with gift wrapping. This is the perfect gift for someone who has asked for no gifts. First, choose a charity that supports a cause the recipient is passionate about. Then, you could get a token item that represents the charity. Wrap up the item with the donation letter, giving it a fancy touch with a ribbon and a bow

5. Do: Give a consumable treat that you know they love.

Don’t: Give them something they’re allergic to or cannot eat.

Wines and spirits and nuts and sweets. Those gifts are always loved, except when you have food allergies or other sensitivities or restrictions. My father-in-law, who is diabetic, would love a tin of nuts but would likely pass on the box of chocolates. Check out the recipient’s gift preferences to see what would be best. If they aren’t on Giftster or haven’t listed preferences, run your gift idea by someone close to them, like a parent, spouse, or child. Use our helpful guide to wrap those oddly shaped gifts of food jars and containers.

6. Do: Keep it simple.

Don’t: Go overboard and don’t impulse shop.

Gifts don’t always need to be grand or one-up the previous year. Don’t overthink it; keep it simple. The little things on a person’s wish list often mean just as much as the big things. And when you’re shopping at the last minute, sometimes simple is best. Remember the recipient’s gift preferences and fight the urge to impulse buy. No giant walruses, okay?

7. Do: Shop Local.

Don’t: Underestimate Shipping Times.

Shopping locally helps support your local community while also helping you find unique or one-of-a-kind gifts. These gifts show the recipient that you spent time and effort thinking about them and their interests. You then took the time to find the perfect gift for them. Sometimes, the thought and effort behind the gift mean more than the gift itself. If you decide to shop online, plan well in advance. Modern shipping times can be unpredictable and often delayed. It’s better to order sooner than risk their gift arriving after Christmas because you did last-minute Christmas shopping.

8. Do: Stay on Budget.

Don’t: Overspend due to lack of planning.

Staying on budget is crucial for reducing your holiday stress. Before you shop, decide how much you can afford to spend on your gifts for the holiday season. Then, break down this total to calculate how much you want to spend on each person. That way, you can narrow your options to gifts that fit your budget.

Without a plan, you won’t know how much you spend until you’re done shopping. You could easily spend significantly more than you want or can afford to. You will also lack direction when gift shopping, increasing your stress levels. Last-minute Christmas shopping can cause you to spend more as stores sell out, and you run out of time to shop for the best deal.

No matter where your last-minute shopping takes you, make sure you have Giftster loaded on your mobile device to double-check those wish lists and gift preferences before you check out.

3 Frequently Asked Sympathy Gift Questions, Answered https://www.giftster.com/news/sympathy-gift-questions-answers/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 15:11:01 +0000 https://cms.giftster.com/?p=12097 If someone you know is grieving, a sympathy gift shows you care for them. Here are answers to common questions about sympathy gifts so you can help others in mourning.

]]>
If you know someone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, you may be wondering how best to show your support. A sympathy gift is a thoughtful way to send your condolences while also respecting privacy at such a difficult time.

Here are the answers to three frequently asked sympathy gift questions.

1. What are thoughtful sympathy gift ideas?

If you think a gift would be appreciated by the family of the deceased, there’s a good chance that it is an appropriate sympathy gift. But if you’re struggling to come up with the best way to show your condolences, here are a few ideas:

  • Food: In the days after a death, family members are usually grieving and busy. Cooking meals for the family, sending groceries to their home, or delivering a gift basket of food can help them through this difficult time.
  • Donations: Many times a family asks for donations to a charity or organizations in lieu of flowers or gifts. The deceased may have been an advocate for a particular cause or may have suffered from a disease related to the donation request.
  • Keepsakes: Windchimes, garden stones, and jewelry can be personalized as memorial gifts. You might also consider a keepsake such as a stuffed animal for a child who has lost a family member.
  • Flowers: Flowers are a very popular sympathy gift. You could choose to send flowers to the funeral home or the family’s home where their beauty serves as a way to remember the deceased.
  • Card: You don’t always have to buy a gift to show your sympathy and condolences. Though small and inexpensive, a sincere and thoughtful card can have a big impact for someone who is grieving.

2. When is it appropriate to give a memorial gift?

The best time to give a sympathy gift is usually as close to the funeral as possible. You’ll be able to show your condolences when someone needs it the most.

However, depending on the gift, it may be appropriate to wait a week or two. If, for example, you want to give a customized present or keepsake in memory of the deceased, it may take some time to personalize.

Other presents, such as meals, can be helpful in the weeks following the funeral. And even if a month has passed, a sympathy gift still shows that you are thinking of the family.

3. How should a sympathy gift be wrapped?

Many sympathy gifts, such as food or donations, don’t need to be wrapped at all. However, it’s always a good idea to give a card along with these presents, because it gives you the opportunity to add a personal message.

If you need to use a gift bag or gift wrap for a memorial gift or keepsake, look for tasteful colors and patterns, such as silver or floral. You can also add a simple bow or ribbon.

Your gift, no matter the size, cost, or how it’s wrapped, shows that you care. Your support and thoughtfulness are exactly what a person in mourning needs the most.
